Visit to Walmer Castle

MHS members’ event

In October 2021 we had a very interesting talk in the Vestry Hall by the new head gardener Philip Oostenbrink at Walmer Castle which is one of the Cinque Ports. The Castle was built in the reign of Henry VIII and Philip told us of its history and something about the people who had been the wardens – from William Pitt, the Duke of Wellington, to the The Queen Mother. He was enthusiastic about his plans for redesigning the gardens and moat and evidently there is a private beach as well. We talked to him about visiting and MHS has arranged a coach trip for the 21st of June.

We will be signing up for this trip at the April, May and June meetings. Both travel and entry will be free to members and, if you are an English Heritage member, please let Jill Nicols know. To see more details about Walmer Castle visit their website.

Meet at the Library at 9am for the coach.
