MHS members’ event
with Jane Scotchmer

After retiring from a career in public speaking Jane continues to pursue both her hobby of painting and drawing and her interest in art and landscape history. She also combines these pursuits with her love of travel in the UK and abroad

We welcome Jane back to Marden and in this talk Jane she will trace the origins of the rockwork grotto from ancient Greek shrine to must have garden accessory in Italy and then England. She also explains how grottoes reflect not only their garden home but the social, scientific, artistic and cultural developments of their time. She visits some of the finest and quirkiest grottoes, concluding with some splendid examples in and around Kent.

Also we will be judging the Caryn Bird Photographic Competition ’Seedheads, Fruits or Berries’ . There will be 2 categories of entry:
- Smart phone photographs
- Photographs taken with a camera

There will be a £20 voucher prize for the winner in each category.
